As someone working in the Alumni Programme within the Networking by Diplomacy unit at the Federal Foreign Office, I can say with confidence that the experience has been both fulfilling and surprising. Initially, I imagined diplomats as individuals who were always in control of complex negotiations, representing their countries with expertise and precision. While this is certainly true in many ways, my experiences in this role have shown me that diplomacy is also about people, about human connections that transcend borders and cultures.

One of the most fascinating aspects of my work is engaging with diplomats from all over the world, each with their own diverse background, experiences and worldviews. Through these interactions, I’ve come to realise that diplomacy is as much about human understanding as it is about policies and international agreements. These individuals bring not only their professional skills to the table but also their personal values, shaped by their countries, cultures and unique life experiences. It’s this blend of expertise and humanity that makes diplomacy so rich and complex.
At the core of the Alumni Programme is the idea of fostering lasting relationships, relationships that go beyond mere professional connections. The alumni network we cultivate provides individuals with opportunities to collaborate, share ideas and support one another long after the official events are over. It’s inspiring to see how these connections evolve into real-world cooperation, shaping not just professional careers but often influencing global affairs in a meaningful way.

The most rewarding part of my role is knowing that we’re helping build a network where people aren’t just exchanging business cards but genuinely connecting on a human level. Our work reminds me that diplomacy is ultimately about fostering mutual respect, understanding and cooperation between people, regardless of their backgrounds or nationalities.
